Program Description

The Master’s Degree Program prepares students for leadership careers in public and private pre-K – 12 education.  Students who successfully complete the 3 semester, 36 credit Program may become simultaneously eligible for both the New York State School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) certificates.  Consistent with State regulations, students entering with only a BA and school-based certification or equivalent experience are eligible for our SBL-only track, those with a prior Master’s but without school-based certification or experience are eligible for the SDL-only, and those, like most Program students, possessing a prior Master’s and school-based certificate or experience are eligible for both the SDL and SBL.  All classes include students from each track.

Selection for the Program is based on a review of the candidate’s academic record (including a prior Master’s in any discipline), relevant work experience, 2 supervisory references, and a personal essay demonstrating the applicant’s potential to become an outstanding professional leader based on previous achievements.

The Educational Leadership Curriculum Scope & Sequence  is uniquely structured to combine a small group, cohort-based Colloquium sequence with a Content sequence in Management and Instructional Leadership.

The Colloquium emphasizes field application of Content knowledge (see below) under the guidance of expert practitioner faculty members.  The Colloquium cohort, students and faculty, remain together throughout the Program, forming bonds intended to last beyond graduation.  Students attend Colloquium seminars, usually held bi-weekly, supplemented by 150 hours per semester of guided fieldwork supervised by  Brooklyn College faculty in collaboration with school and district personnel.  A satisfactory fieldwork portfolio is required of each graduate.

Content courses, often taught online, integrate building- and district-level skills meeting New York State standards for  School Building and School District Leaders.  Each semester, students take 2 Content courses.  Semester 1: (a) Management and Finance, (b) Instruction and Curriculum Development, Innovation, and Evaluation; Semester 2: (a) Personnel Administration, (b) Supervision of Instruction; Semester 3: (a) Education Law and Ethics, (b) School and Community Relations.

The Program prepares instructional leaders who can successfully work in alternative settings as well as traditional schools.  Graduates are prepared to work with staff and students of every background and to educate children of differing academic abilities and learning needs so that they can reach and exceed ambitious State and City standards.

Our students have great things to say about Educational Leadership at  Brooklyn College.  Graduate Kathy Ortiz was recently interviewed by the Brooklyn College publication, “Monday Morning”:

"The program here is far better than anywhere else," says Ortiz, who has a bachelor's degree in linguistics and a master's in reading specialization from  Hunter College. "Here you learn how to write observation reports; you learn real things. Other programs have a lot more theory. Here, you get a practical, real education."

As a testing coordinator at an East Harlem school, Ortiz is responsible for making sure the school is in compliance with state-mandated exams. "At work, I see and use what all my professors have taught me," she says.

"I think I'll be a good principal," says Ortiz.  "And Brooklyn College has definitely given me the tools for that. The work has been tough here but good."
