Teaching in three graduate programs, School Psychology and Special Education at Brooklyn College, and at the Ph.D. program in Urban Education - CUNY Graduate Center, I try to engage my students in the active questioning and re-envisioning of urban schools. I am interested in the processes that create opportunities and risks for children, and the roles that professionals and disciplines play in constructing school cultures. These areas of scholarship bridge my interests in psychology and education, and in identity and school culture. My writing focuses on testing, placements, and other educational paths constructed for children who are vulnerable in schools and society, i.e.: children who are classified as disabled, members of ethnic minorities, and immigrants. My recent publications include:

Rethinking Multicultural Education: Case Studies in Cultural Transition, co-edited with Carol Korn (Bergin & Garvey, 2002), http://www.greenwood.com/catalog/G871.aspx

Teaching Teachers: Building a Quality School of Urban Education, co-edited with Joe Kincheloe and Shirley Steinberg (Peter Lang Publishing, 2004) http://www.peterlang.com/home.cfm?vLang

The Praeger Handbook of Special Education (Praeger Books, 2007) http://www.greenwood.com/catalog/GR3262.aspx

Currently, I am working on Children with Physical Disabilities (Under contract with Greenwood Press.)

At Abilities! (Formerly the National Center for Disability Services) I am actively involved in field-based projects researching the experiences of families with children with severe physical disabilities. I also work with advocacy groups in New York City seeking to enhance educational opportunities for all children
