Stanley Wolfe came to Brooklyn College after serving for 33 years in the NYC Public Schools. As a generalist, he has supervised every academic department in NYC Middle School. As a specialist, he has been a science teacher and supervisor for the past 40 years.
He is the originator and senior author of the Concepts & Challenges in Science textbook program. C&C is the most senior science program in use in United States middle schools. The first edition was published in 1970. It is currently in use in all 50 states.
Throughout his career, his goal has been to increase the quality of science education and to enhance the self-image of public school teachers. He tells the story of two riveters who were at their lunch break during the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. A reporter from a local newspaper asked each worker in turn what his job was. The first man replied that he was a riveter. The second man replied that he was a bridge builder. In-service and pre-service teachers in Professor Wolfe's classes are encouraged to be "Bridge Builders".
